Supported Internships and Apprenticeships

Supported Internships and Apprenticeships

Supported Internships

Our supported internships are study programmes, based primarily in a job role at school. They are available to pupils in our 6th form.

They are intended to enable our pupils to achieve sustainable, paid employment by equipping them with the skills, knowledge and behaviours they need for work through learning in the workplace.

Internships include unpaid work placements that normally last for a year. Wherever possible, they support the young person to move into paid employment, often an apprenticeship, at the end of the programme.

Students complete a personalised study programme which includes English and maths to an appropriate level.

Opportunities include placements within the following teams:

  • Reception
  • Business & Admin
  • IT Support

During the Supported Internship the pupil’s class teacher acts as their job coach and works closely with the line manager of the department that the pupil is working for. The intern will also receive regular 1:1 sessions with their line manager.

Suitable applicants need to show an interest in the chosen vocational area and be able to consistently demonstrate the relevant skills with increasing independence.

Apprenticeships

Successful completion of an internship could lead to the possibility of a paid apprenticeship with that placement team after pupils complete their schooling in Year 14. Apprenticeships are work based programmes linked directly to a job role.

We have successfully supported pupils through apprenticeships in collaboration with Bucks Adult Learning.

Scarlett is permanently employed as one of our reception team. Scarlett won the Apprentice of The Year Award in 2022 from Bucks Adult Learning, she studied a Level 2 Customer Services Apprenticeship while working on our reception desk, you can hear her talk about her experiences in this video.

Richard is permanently employed as an IT Engineer and is currently studying a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship.

Both Scarlett and Richard are not only valuable members of our team but an inspiration to younger interns, they both mentor 6th formers during their internships.

This opportunity does not guarantee a permanent position at Furze Down School after the apprenticeship is complete but it gives excellent grounding for a full-time position elsewhere.
